  2. Married to the radical Henry Blackwell in
  3. 1855, she gained wide publicity when, after a
  4. mutual declaration rejecting the legal
  5. superiority of the man in marriage, she chose
  6. to retain her own surname despite her
  7. marriage. The epithet `Lucy Stoner' was
  8. coined to mean a woman who advocated doing
  9. the same. In the 1860s she helped to
  10. establish the American Woman Suffrage
  11. Association and founded and edited the Boston
  12. Woman's Journal, a suffragist paper that was
  13. later edited by her daughter Alice Stone
  14. Blackwell (1857-1950).
